5 Benefits of Drinking Matcha
Does it seem like everyone is drinking matcha these days and you’re wondering what all the hype is about?? I want to start this post by saying, I’m one of those people, I’m proud to claim I’m matcha OBSESSED.😍 So before I get preach-y & dive into explaining all the wonderful benefits of matcha, I wanted to give you a lil’ backstory of how I got into it.
I initially tried matcha because I wanted to find a substitute for coffee. A girl I connected with on Instagram was doing a coffee and alcohol detox and I wanted to try it too because I felt dependant on coffee (absolutely needed it to get any work done 😶) and wanted to get used to not having it. SO matcha seemed like a good substitute so I would still have a bit of caffeine each day.
I started by going to Starbucks each day and getting a green tea latte, which was a little bit more pricey than my usual cup of coffee. So eventually I ordered some matcha powder online, a small portion to try it and started making iced matcha lattes at home.
I was hooked! Physically I felt SO good, and mentally I felt more clear, sharp, creative, focused, calm, and present. 🙌
The feeling was amazinggg. I then bought a larger quantity of matcha powder from David’s Tea. It’s not super cheap like regular tea but it’s worth it! And way cheaper to make at home than to buy a latte everyday from Starbucks.
Even after the detox was supposed to end I continued to have it every day. The more I drank it the better I felt. My reasoning why this made sense was the matcha was compounding. Imagine eating McDonalds for one meal, you wouldn’t notice a change in your body. But if you started eating it everyday you would!
Your cells are made up of what you eat, they are constantly regenerating and at different rates. It’s been about 8 months that I’ve had matcha almost everyday (sometimes twice a day) so it’s part of my cellular make up now. (Obviously not a scientist, but this sounds logical to me. 🤷♀️ Comment below if I’m way off base thinking this lol)
This is what I tell my friends & family now that they are adding it to their routine. They might not feel a difference right away but over time you will, and your body will reap the benefits! 🤩
How did I know how great matcha made me feel? Well one day I was desperately tired and had a cup of coffee, OMG BAD IDEA!! 😫
I felt panicked, heart racing, my fight or flight response kicked, and I was on the verge of an anxiety attack which I hadn’t had in years but could feel the symptoms of it coming on. It was scary but also eye-opening. That made me realize the incredible impact matcha had on me. Mind you I’m very sensitive to things like caffeine and what I ingest, so these feelings are heightened for me.
I’ve had anxiety since university, it hasn’t been as bad now that I’m not in school and since starting my business, but it fluctuates. (I used to have problems falling asleep, experience tightness in my chest, nervousness, the feeling something bad was going to happen, and always worrying about the past or future, etc.) Yeah all those feelings.. NO THANK YOU. So after that experience I’ve stayed away from coffee completely.
As you can see I’m very passionate about matcha and diligent about having a cup or two each day, I also recommend it to anyone that will listen to me rant about it. 😂 I want everyone to feel their best and live healthy vibrant lives, and if one little swap in your morning drink makes a difference that’s such an easy and attainable change!
Now that I’ve shared my personal backstory with matcha, here are 5 benefits of matcha and why you should incorporate it into your diet. 😄
1. Matcha is packed with antioxidants
Matcha has more antioxidants than any other superfood! One cup of matcha has as many antioxidants as 10 cups of brewed green tea. This is because steeping in water can only extract a fraction of the benefits, meanwhile matcha is stoneground green tea leaves, so you’re actually ingesting the leaf. (I compare it to eating spinach leaves versus drinking boiled spinach water)
Why are antioxidants so amazing? They are naturally occurring chemical compounds that prevent aging and chronic diseases. Antioxidants are the body’s defence agents, the more you have the better equipped your body is in the fight against infections and disease.
Matcha has 20 times more antioxidants that pomegranates and blueberries and matcha contains a unique, potent class of antioxidant known as catechins, which aren’t found in other foods. Over 60% of the catechins in matcha are EGCg’s. EGCg’s counteract the effects of free radicals from pollution, UV rays, radiation, and chemicals and fight cancer.
Basically if you want to stay looking young, fight off cancer & sickness, DRINK MATCHA! 🙌
2. Matcha supports weight loss
Matcha boosts your metabolism, burns fat AND doesn’t put stress on the body in the process. (It doesn’t raise your blood pressure or heart rate.) Matcha can increase thermogenesis (body’s rate of burning calories) from a normal 8-10% of daily energy expenditure to 35-43% of daily energy expenditure. That’s an added health benefit. 👌 This is also why you’ll see many weight loss products include “green tea extract” as an ingredient.
3. Matcha helps concentration & focus
Matcha is rich in L-Theanine, which is a rare amino acid that promotes a state of relaxation and well being. When you are stressed this induces beta waves, which you experience when you feel excited or agitated. L-Theanine creates alpha waves, which lead to a state of relaxed alertness, clarity of mind and sense of calm. You don’t experience the nervous, jittery energy like when you drink coffee. Alert and calm, it’s the best feeling EVER and I didn’t know it was possible until I started drinking matcha. 🙌
4. Matcha detoxifies the body
Matcha is rich in chlorophyll, and chlorophyll is a powerful detoxifier that helps eliminate chemicals and heavy metals from the body. Camellia sinensis plants (where matcha comes from) are grown in the shade or covered 20-30 days before harvest to avoid direct sunlight. This increases chlorophyll production and gives the plant a darker green hue, hence the super vibrant green powder! 🍵
5. Matcha increases your energy
There is about 35mg of caffeine per half teaspoon of matcha which gives you energy. But you also get a boost from the unique combination of nutrients in matcha such as potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, protein, & calcium. There are no side effects like with stimulants such as nervousness and hypertension, instead matcha provides good, clean energy by fuelling your body with the micronutrients it needs!
Let me know in the comments if matcha is something you’re thinking about incorporating into your daily routine! 🤗
