Santorini, Greece

I can not believe it has been over a year since visiting Santorini. In the summer of 2014 my boyfriend and I planned a very full trip backpacking throughout Europe for three weeks. I had dreamed of travelling to Europe for quite some time and decided one day to make it happen. I convinced my boyfriend to come along for this adventure I had planned, and somehow we saved our money, booked our tickets and made our dream come true. Santorini was actually one of our last stops, but I am currently craving the sunshine and crystal waters so I feel inclined to share about our time there first.

My advice for anyone planning a trip; allocate enough time to rest and relax because we ran ourselves into the ground. With such a short time to be in a beautiful place we didn't want to waste a single second. Every day was filled with sightseeing. And lots and lots of walking. Since we were on a budget we tried to keep unnecessary expenses to a minimum, so taxi's were out of the question. I can attest that our trip was definitely not a glamorous one. My feet were covered in blisters and my clothes were wrinkled from being squeezed into my backpack. However none of that mattered because we were in great company and witnessing some of the most beautiful sights in the world.

It is amusing to reminisce on out time in Santorini, we had some interesting encounters. I remember we took an eight hour ferry ride from Athens to Santorini that departed at 7:00am. We experienced a little trouble with some shady characters the night before and we had to change hotels late at night. So the next morning we were exhausted. We ended up passing out on the floor of the ferry using our backpacks as pillows and clothing as blankets. A couple nights later we planned to go out to the bars. We purchased local wine at the grocery store to drink beforehand, but it was unbearable! I could honestly not keep it down. That didn't matter though because I fell asleep before we left. Not exactly how I would describe my ideal night out. To top it off, there was a windstorm that lasted the entire time we were there. This did not result in the best beach excursions.

These incidences were not favourable but it made our trip unique and full of surprises. We still managed to explore the island and I was able to take a few photos. Overall I am quite happy with the many stories we have.
